BETHANY WHEELER
Wheelchair Basketball
Bethany is one of the newest athletes in PTS's appeal -Empowering Female athletes in Disability Sport - after fundraising Gala in October 2019.

"Wheelchair basketball gave me an opportunity to continue doing what I loved, I have always been involved in sport growing up and as my disability got worse becoming a wheelchair user, I was unsure I would be able to continue in sport. Wheelchair basketball has greatly helped me cope with my progressing disability as I have not had to stop playing sport and am able to play on a level playing field with other people like me who understand the challenges I am going through.

I want to be the best player I can be, and one day the best player in the world. At first, I played for fun, I still enjoy the game but my ambitions have changed, I want to compete at the Paralympics, multiple Paralympics and win medals.

In 2015, I started playing wheelchair basketball and in later half of 2019 I was selected for the GB U25 team which won the bronze at the U25 World Championships 2019 in Thailand, I was also a reserve for the Senior European Championships team in 2019. Last season I also made my Euroleague debut representing my club team Titans playing at Eurocup as the only female on the team.

I currently a full-time athlete, I took a year out from university this year to focus on my training to give myself the best chance to make the final selection squad going into Tokyo."
